Our dreams out grew our space.
Starting out as a small theatre program we were delighted to be working at the Oxford Centre in Longbenton. Demand for our services quickly outstripped the space available.
Expanding South of the Tyne for a Sunday allowed us to spread our reach, but we were still feeling pinched by the availability of space.
In early 2023, North Tyneside Council made a building available for True Colours. One look at the inside and we knew we had our fundraising work cut out for us.
-Damp
-Toilet facilities in total shambles
-No working electric
-Cramped rooms
-Plumbing was non-existent
It looked like a disaster…but we could see our future sparkling in the rubble.
More classes during term-time
More holiday camps
More flexibility in scheduling
More support for non-traditional school cohorts
More space for hosting outreach events
Despite the damp, our aspirations were on fire.
DIY SOS , SCD, and 100s of Volunteer
Trades People Made Our New Home Possible!
As our board got to work writing grants, researching funding options,
and digging through building codes, to get the building started, DIY SOS appeared.
They were looking for dance companies that needed help with their building.
It was fate.
The email deluge of love, support, and impact swamped the BBC with
recommendations for True Colours.
The team at DIY SOS were overwhelmed and not just by email.
When they came out to look at the building, they knew they were in for a challenge.
The DIY team was worried that they wouldn’t be able to get it done in just one week.
But, as we found out, Nick Knowles and his team never back down from a challenge…even one with degraded plumbing and a “wee” electrics issue.
In a whirlwind of just a week (with lots of filming in between, interviews, performances and showcases) our new home was ready for us.
DIY SOS came through and brought their friends from Strictly Come Dancing along for the ride, as well as local trades from around the region.
Words are not enough to express how grateful we are to the trades who came together with the DIY SOS team to make our dreams come true.
